FAQS

Metal Roofing FAQS

Can it be installed over my current roof?

In most cases, Yes! This not only allows us to keep from making the mess that most people associate with replacing an asphalt roof-no nails!-but also provides an extra layer of sound deadening that will keep your home more quiet. Building codes may require the tear-off of shingles when more than one layer is present. Make sure that your installer explains to you how your roof’s current condition will affect the installation of your new metal roof!

Does it increase the risk from lightning?

No! A metal roof will not increase the likelihood of lightning striking your home. And, if your home is hit by lightning, your metal roof will disperse the energy safely throughout the structure. Since metal roofing isn’t combustible or flammable, it’s a low risk and a desirable roofing option where severe weather is concerned, especially for lightning.

Can it stand up to extreme weather?

Yes! A metal roof can withstand all types of extreme weather – high winds, heavy snow, hailstorms, and even wildfires. Metal roofing has a wind rating of up to 150 mph! It can withstand wind gusts up to 150 miles per hour – equal to an F2 tornado. Under high wind conditions metal roofing systems have wind resistance and uplift resistance that is above the new building code requirements.

Is it too heavy for some home & structures?

No! Metal roofing systems generally weigh half of what other materials weigh. Less than 3 pounds per square foot. The actual weight is dependent upon metal gauge and profile of the panel. Surprisingly, the weight of a metal roof is significantly lighter than any other type of roofing materials. It typically weighs less than one-third of the weight of an asphalt or fiberglass shingle roof and is much lighter than clay, concrete, or slate at about 75%. This makes metal roofing a great choice for just about any application!

Is it loud when it rains?

No! A common misconception is that a metal roof will be noisier than other types of roofing. When installed with solid sheathing, a metal roof on your home will actually silence noise from rain, hail and bad weather, many times much better than other roofing materials. Most of our customers love the way that the rain sounds on their new roof. And, if your roof already has issues from noise, we can use acoustically deadening materials to mitigate any issues.

Is it walkable?

Yes! You can walk on your metal roof. For classic rib-style metal roofing, we recommend walking on the fasteners where you will have more support. Ask your installer about walking on your own roof. Care must always be taken when walking on your roof. Metal surfaces can become slippery when wet or covered with foreign materials. For safety, avoid walking on a metal roof at these times. Also, due to the powerful reflective properties of our materials, metal roofs can become very, very hot on a bright summer day. Always use caution when climbing on your roof and make sure you have someone nearby-just in case.

Is it good for the environment?

Yes! Metal roofing is the very greenest choice available for several reasons. Asphalt and other materials absorb the heat of the summer sun. Our metal roofs and the coatings we employ are designed to reflect much of this heat. Many of our coatings are even Energy-Star® rated. When you combine these technologies with a properly installed radiant barrier, you end up with a roof that can lower your heating and cooling costs up to 40%!
Its long life expectancy guarantees sustainability. Moreover, the ability to install it over most existing roofs (avoiding landfill disposal of old materials) quite likely make it the most environmentally-friendly roof available. And it is recyclable! When it finally comes time to discard the your metal roof, it will probably out-live your home, the recycle value will most likely exceed what you paid for your new roof today!
